MUMBAI: Simple home remedies work for this feisty 105-year-old. Govind Bhai Dobaria, who recently underwent a hernia operation, was back on his feet within a few hours of the surgery.
One of the oldest patients to be operated on for hernia, Govind has no other medical history and in case of minor ailments like flu, he relies on his tried and trusted home remedies.

Govind, who was operated for the hernia (protrusion of an organ or tissue), had been putting off the surgery for nearly three years, before his family could convince him to seek medical help. According to his youngest son, Dhirajlal (48), for the first 75 years of his life, Govind never needed any kind of medical help. "For minor ailments like cold and fever, he would rely on home remedies,'' said Dhirajlal, a diamond merchant by profession.
For Govind, who leads an otherwise healthy life, a typical day would involve interacting with his family members and spending quality time with his grandchildren. "Spiritual programmes on television hold his interest and he spends hours listening to discourses,'' said his son. Govind has no history of any heart ailment, diabetes or blood pressure.
Govind discovered his hernia three years ago, but was hesitant to undergo an operation, considering his age. Finally, the pain got so bad that he confided in his family. A former farmer from a village in Gujarat, Govind was staying with his elder son, but was brought to the city by Dhirajlal for treatment. "The local doctor who examined my father suggested surgery, to avoid complications,'' said Dhirajlal.
"Govindbhai approached us in November last year. But decided against being operated upon. Recently the pain got worse, and he had reached a stage where he could suffer possible strangulation which would be fatal,'' said Dr Upendra Mehta.
It took some amount of cajoling and convincing by Mehta and Dhirajlal to finally convince Govind to undergo the operation. However, after the surgery he was back on his feet and as Dhirajlal put it, "It was almost as if he never underwent an operation.''
